Seoul: Unionized workers of Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) announced on Wednesday their intention to commence an indefinite general strike starting Thursday to demand higher pay and an expanded workforce. The Korean Railway Workers' Union (KRWU), representing the workers, has warned that the strike could significantly impact the operations of high-speed KTX and regular train services across South Korea, as well as subway services in the capital region. According to Yonhap News Agency, KRWU members plan to organize rallies at five different locations nationwide, including Seoul Station, on Thursday to officially launch their strike. The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union, which the KRWU is part of, released a statement emphasizing the urgency of the situation. They stated that the time has come to address the substantial influence that declared martial law, and they intend to persist with the strike against the Yoon Suk Yeol government. In response to the impending strike, KORAIL has announced that it will implement an emergency work system to reduce disruptions to train operations if labor-management negotiations fail to reach a resolution. The company has assured that it will deploy all available resources to maintain safe and efficient train operations during the strike period.
