Seoul: A military command, initiated with the declaration of martial law by President Yoon Suk Yeol late Tuesday, has announced a comprehensive decree banning all forms of political activities. This includes protests and actions by political parties across the nation. According to Yonhap News Agency, the decree was issued by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, a four-star general appointed to lead the command. The decree, effective from 11 p.m. Tuesday, aims to protect free democracy and ensure the safety of citizens from anti-state forces threatening to destabilize the country. Gen. Park emphasized that all political activities related to the National Assembly, regional assemblies, political parties, and any formation of political organizations, rallies, and protests are strictly prohibited. In addition to political activities, the decree places media and publishers under the control of the martial law command. It also mandates trainee doctors, currently on a walkout, to resume work within 48 hours. Gen. Park declared that any acts undermining free democracy or attempts at subversion, including spreading fake news, manipulating public opinion, and false instigation, are prohibited under the decree. The decree further stipulates that individuals violating martial law can be subject to arrest or raids without a warrant. The martial law command, under the leadership of the commander, is responsible for overseeing administrative and legal affairs in the affected regions. It holds the authority to implement special measures concerning arrests, seizures, media, and collective action when deemed necessary. By legal stipulation, the commander operates under the supervision of the defense minister. However, in cases where martial law is declared nationwide or deemed necessary, the presidential office assumes supervisory control over the commander and the martial law operations.
