Putin Praises North Korea’s Troop Dispatch to Ukraine in New Year’s Message to Kim

Pyongyang: Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended New Year's greetings to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, lauding the "heroic" deployment of North Korean troops in support of Russia's conflict with Ukraine, as reported by North Korea's state media on Thursday. Kim received Putin's message on December 18, which included "wholehearted congratulations" for the new year, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

According to Yonhap News Agency, Putin emphasized the significant developments in Moscow-Pyongyang relations over the past year, particularly highlighting the involvement of North Korean troops in the ongoing war with Ukraine. He described this cooperation as a testament to the "invincible friendship and militant fraternity" between the two nations.

Putin also reflected on the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Russia and North Korea, noting that it has significantly enhanced productive bilateral cooperation across political, trade, economic, and other fields. He expressed confidence in the continued strengthening of friendly relations and alliances, promising constructive collaboration on regional and international matters.

The Russian President underscored the importance of these relations for the benefit of both nations and their contribution to establishing a just multi-polar world order. This commitment to ongoing cooperation comes amidst diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict, indicating potential continued alignment between Russia and North Korea.

The KCNA's announcement came a week after Putin's message was delivered, potentially to underscore the robust ties between North Korea and Russia. This coincides with a separate report on Kim Jong-un's inspection of a nuclear-powered submarine construction site, highlighting North Korea's nuclear capabilities and commitment to national security. During the inspection, Kim reiterated the country's dedication to ensuring a peaceful environment and absolute security through its nuclear forces, aligning with its national security policy.
