Incheon: Prosecutors have demanded the death penalty for a 62-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his 33-year-old son during a birthday celebration. The incident occurred at the son's residence in Incheon, located west of Seoul, on July 20. The suspect has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and violating the firearms control act.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the suspect reportedly attempted to shoot additional victims, including his daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and an acquaintance of the daughter-in-law. These details were disclosed by prosecutors who emphasized the gravity of the crime, leading to the recommendation of the death penalty during the trial held at the Incheon District Court.
Investigations revealed that the accused started planning the crime in August last year. He allegedly watched YouTube videos to learn how to construct a homemade gun and an auto-ignition device. During a search of his residence in Seoul's Dobong Ward, investigators uncovered multiple explosive devices that were set to detonate the following day.
The shooter had a contentious past, having divorced his wife following a conviction for a sex crime. Despite this, he had been receiving long-term financial support from both his ex-wife and their son until late 2023.
