Gwangju: Prosecutors on Monday sought the death penalty for a man accused of murdering a female high school student in the southwestern city of Gwangju in May, citing a high risk of repeat offenses.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Gwangju District Prosecutors Office demanded the sentence during the trial of 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi. Jang was charged with killing 16-year-old Lee Chae-won on a street in Gwangju on May 5 after attempting to rape her. The prosecutors highlighted the severity of the crime and the potential threat Jang poses if he were to return to society.

Jang faces additional charges for attempting to kill a 17-year-old male student who intervened to help the victim, raping a Vietnamese woman two days before the murder, and illegally filming a teenage girl's body. The prosecution emphasized the high risk of recidivism, pointing to Jang's record of violent behavior and sexual assault.

In his final statement, Jang expressed remorse and apologized to the victims, acknowledging that he will bear the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to be held on September 30.
