Prosecution Forms Task Force to Investigate Fatal Seoul Overpass Collapse

Seoul: The prosecution announced Wednesday the formation of a specialized team to investigate the recent collapse of an overpass in Seoul, which resulted in three fatalities and injuries to three others.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors Office has organized an 11-member team, comprising four prosecutors and six investigators. This team will collaborate closely with police and labor officials to ascertain the cause of the accident, identify those responsible, and provide assistance to the victims.

The Seosomun Overpass in western Seoul partially collapsed during its demolition on Tuesday. The incident claimed the lives of the chief supervisor of an engineering company, the site manager, and an outside expert. The three injured individuals sustained injuries to their waist, head, and ribs.

A prosecution official emphasized the smooth progress of the investigation, highlighting the team's collaboration with the police from the warrant application stage.

Police have conducted a forensic examination of the site from midnight until 4 a.m., alongside the National Forensic Service and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency. The findings will help determine whether the demolition adhered to safety protocols. Should any violations be discovered, police intend to hold accountable those responsible from the Seoul metropolitan government and the construction company.
