Presidential Office Criticizes Court’s Arrest Warrant for Yoon

Seoul: The presidential office on Sunday criticized a court’s decision to issue a warrant to formally arrest President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid. The court’s decision came days after Yoon was detained for questioning over his Dec. 3 martial law decree, which has plunged South Korea into unprecedented political turmoil.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung Jin-suk, Yoon’s chief of staff, also appeared to defend the impeached president’s martial law bid, stating that people would need to determine whether the declaration of martial law was a riot to violate the constitutional order or an emergency measure to uphold it. Chung’s comments highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the legality and necessity of Yoon’s actions during this politically volatile period.

On the same day, Chung convened a meeting of senior presidential aides, pledging to support the government in handling diplomatic and security affairs. The presidential office emphasized its commitment to cooperating with the Cabinet in addressing economic challenges, specifically focusing on managing the high exchange rate, high interest, and high oil prices, as stated in an official statement.
