Presidential Office Advocates for Special Law on Renewable Energy Zones

Seoul: The presidential office announced plans to push for a special law aimed at establishing industrial zones powered entirely by renewable energy sources. This initiative seeks to address existing regional power imbalances.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Yong-beom, the presidential chief of staff for policy, informed reporters about the initiative's goal to create "RE100" industrial zones. These zones will enable companies to operate using 100 percent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power.

President Lee Jae Myung, after being briefed on the plan in a meeting with senior aides, suggested numerous incentives for companies within these zones. These incentives include easing regulations, enhancing living conditions, and offering discounts on electricity bills.

The purpose of these zones is to alleviate the electricity demand imbalance, as electricity consumption is predominantly concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, whereas the southwestern regions have abundant renewable energy resources.

A task force, which will include the ministries of industry, finance, and transport, will be established to draft the special legislation and manage the implementation of the RE100 zones.
