Presidential Candidates to Clash in Televised Economic Debate

Seoul: Democratic Party (DP) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung and his People Power Party (PPP) rival Kim Moon-soo are preparing for a crucial televised debate focused on reviving the nation's economy. This debate, set to take place on Sunday, marks the first of its kind leading up to the June 3 election.

According to Yonhap News Agency, candidates from minor parties, including Lee Jun-seok of the New Reform Party and Kwon Young-kook of the Democratic Labor Party, will join the debate at 8 p.m. The event is organized by the National Election Commission. The debate will revolve around themes such as revitalizing the economy, trade strategies in the Trump era, and enhancing national competitiveness.

DP's Lee, who has been leading opinion polls, aims to maintain his position by showcasing his readiness for the presidency. Meanwhile, PPP's Kim plans to criticize Lee's regional currency proposals as populist, advocating instead for policies that support business freedom and innovation. Lee from the New Reform Party is also set to challenge the DP candidate's promises, while Kwon will propose strategies to address economic inequality.

All four candidates are expected to scale back their campaign activities to focus on debate preparation. In addition, DP's Lee and the New Reform Party's Lee will attend an event commemorating the 45th anniversary of the 1980 pro-democracy uprising in Gwangju before the debate. Kim intends to unveil his economic pledges as part of his debate preparation.

The candidates will participate in two more televised debates scheduled for May 23 and May 27, ahead of the election day.
