Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol is set to embark on a significant diplomatic tour from November 14 to 21, visiting Peru and Brazil to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and Group of 20 (G20) summits, as confirmed by his office on Tuesday. The upcoming engagements aim to bolster South Korea's presence in international economic and political arenas. According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon's itinerary includes a visit to Peru from Thursday to Saturday to partake in the APEC summit, followed by a trip to Brazil from Sunday to Tuesday for the G20 summit, as announced by Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo. During these summits, Yoon is scheduled to engage in a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, with discussions also underway for a potential trilateral summit involving U.S. President Joe Biden and Ishiba, alongside a separate meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In light of speculations about a possible meeting with former U.S. President Donald Tr ump, a senior official noted ongoing communications with Trump's aides, though no definitive plans have been established. This meeting follows a recent phone call between Yoon and Trump, where they expressed mutual interest in an early meeting. South Korean officials are actively engaging with Trump's network, anticipating possible changes in trade policies and discussions about South Korea's financial contributions to U.S. military presence. At the APEC summit in Lima, President Yoon will reaffirm South Korea's dedication to free and fair trade and accept the chairmanship for the 2025 APEC meeting, which will be hosted in Gyeongju. Additionally, Yoon plans to hold talks with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and participate in a ceremony marking the construction of a South Korean-built vessel in Peru. In Rio de Janeiro, during the G20 summit, Yoon will advocate for global initiatives addressing famine, poverty, and climate change, emphasizing the importance of international unity against military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. Kim Tae-hyo elaborated on the objectives of Yoon's trip, highlighting efforts to reinforce international solidarity, expand diplomatic relations, and enhance practical cooperation with Latin American countries.
