Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung's recent decision to reshuffle six Cabinet ministers comes as a significant move in response to plummeting approval ratings and policy controversies. According to Yonhap News Agency, the reshuffle was deemed necessary as Lee entered his second year in office, signaling a need for a fresh start. Among the changes, the dismissal of Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stands out, following allegations of desertion during his military service in the 1980s. Jung Sung-ho resigned following the passage of the Criminal Procedure Amendment Act, which limited the prosecution's authority over police investigations. In his place, Rep. Kim, a former judge and close ally of Lee, is known for advocating the dismissal of indictments against the president, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

Lee's choice of Kim has sparked criticism, particularly from the opposition People Power Party. Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, the party's chairman, expressed concern that Kim might attempt to dismiss charges against Lee, highlighting the risk of a serious conflict of interest.

The reshuffle and Lee's personnel choices come at a time when his approval rating has fallen to a historic low of 38.9 percent, according to a Realmeter poll conducted from August 24 to 28. The poll attributes this decline to unpopular policies, controversies surrounding Supreme Court justice nominations, and a crisis of credibility facing the police.
