Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday extended his congratulations to Sanae Takaichi on her historic election as Japan's new prime minister. He expressed his hopes to engage with her at the forthcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea next week.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee shared his congratulatory remarks on Facebook shortly after Takaichi's election was confirmed. In his message, he emphasized the importance of enhancing future-oriented and mutually beneficial cooperation between South Korea and Japan. He also highlighted the value of frequent and close communication through shuttle diplomacy between the two nations' leaders.

Lee underscored the significance of South Korea-Japan relations in the context of evolving global dynamics, describing the current period as a "critical turning point." He expressed eagerness to meet Takaichi in Gyeongju during the APEC summit for constructive dialogue.

The presidential office conveyed optimism about sustaining the positive trajectory in bilateral relations established under Takaichi's predecessors. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung highlighted the advancement of ties through trust and communication, affirming South Korea's commitment to maintaining these improvements and fostering continued exchanges.

Kang also mentioned ongoing working-level consultations to facilitate a summit meeting between Lee and Takaichi at the APEC forum. A meeting is anticipated as part of efforts to further strengthen bilateral relations.

In addition to his social media message, Lee plans to send a formal congratulatory letter to Takaichi through diplomatic channels, as stated by Kang.

Takaichi's election introduces potential uncertainties into South Korea-Japan relations, particularly with regard to historical issues and territorial claims. Known for her strong stance on Japan's colonial history and territorial disputes, her leadership approach may influence future diplomatic interactions between the two countries.
