Daegu: The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) on Sunday nominated three-term lawmaker Rep. Choo Kyung-ho as its candidate for the mayor of Daegu in the upcoming June 3 local elections. Choo's nomination marks a significant step for the party as Daegu is known to be a major conservative stronghold.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Choo, who has previously served as the finance minister and the party's floor leader, emerged victorious over Rep. Yoo Yeong-ha in a party primary. This victory positions Choo to run for mayor in a city that is seen as a steadfast bastion for the conservative bloc. The party's nomination committee announced the decision, highlighting Choo's experience and leadership within the party.
Choo will be contesting against former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, who has been nominated by the ruling Democratic Party. The upcoming election is anticipated to be a key contest between the two major political parties, with Daegu's political landscape under close scrutiny.
