South Korea's main opposition leader, Jang Dong-hyeok, met with a high-ranking aide to the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy during his visit to Washington last week, confirmed a State Department spokesperson. The spokesperson emphasized the department's ongoing commitment to engaging with a wide range of individuals to advance U.S. interests.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Gavin Wax, who serves as the chief of staff to Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, held a meeting with Jang Dong-hyeok, the leader of the People Power Party (PPP). This meeting was arranged at the request of Jang's delegation during their visit. Jang had previously claimed to have met with an "assistant secretary" during his trip.

The spokesperson clarified the nature of the meeting, stating, "At the request of the traveling delegation, ROK PPP Chairman Jang Dong-hyeok and his delegation were introduced to the Chief of Staff to the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy Gavin Wax." The statement further noted that ROK stands for the Republic of Korea, the official name of South Korea.

The meeting covered various aspects of public diplomacy efforts within the America First State Department, with a focus on effectively advancing and representing U.S. interests. After his return from the United States, Jang released a photo showing him engaged in discussions with a U.S. official. The image, which only revealed the back of the official, sparked widespread speculation regarding the individual's identity.
