Seoul: Main opposition People Power Party (PPP) leader Jang Dong-hyeok on Wednesday pledged sweeping reforms of the party as he marked his first anniversary in office, vowing to win the 2028 general elections. Rep. Jang made the announcement during a press conference at the National Assembly, unveiling a reform plan aimed at strengthening party members' role while broadening the party's support base and addressing livelihood issues.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Jang emphasized that the past year was focused on rebuilding the party and uniting conservatives, while the upcoming year will be dedicated to laying a foundation for victory. With a year left in his term, Jang declared his intent to make a fresh start and underscored his commitment to expanding party members' role by allowing direct participation in the election of provincial and local party chiefs.

The proposal to expand members' roles has been a point of contention within the PPP, with some lawmakers concerned that it might deepen internal divisions. However, Jang insisted on bringing in individuals ready to advocate for the party and vowed to establish a foundation for securing a majority victory in the 2028 general elections, with the ultimate goal of regaining power.

Under Jang's leadership, the PPP faced challenges in recent elections, securing only four out of sixteen key mayoral and gubernatorial seats in the June 3 local elections. Despite this, the party managed to win the strategically important battleground of Seoul and secured four out of fourteen seats in the concurrent by-elections.

As part of his reform agenda, Jang introduced the "People Power Party 2.0 initiative," focusing on addressing livelihood issues and enhancing public communication. He also proposed the creation of a committee under the party leader to oversee policies across various areas, including the economy, diplomacy, security, and youth-related issues.
