Busan: Rep. Jin Jong-oh of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) announced on Thursday his intention to file for a court injunction to halt the disciplinary measures imposed on him for endorsing an independent candidate in a parliamentary by-election.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision follows the PPP ethics committee's ruling, which suspended Jin's party membership for two years. The suspension was a consequence of Jin's support for independent candidate Han Dong-hoon in the by-election for a parliamentary seat in Busan, preceding the local elections on June 3. This action was taken despite the fact that the PPP had its own candidate contesting in the same district.

In a statement on Facebook, Jin expressed his intent to seek a legal assessment on several aspects of the disciplinary action. He aims to determine whether the action's grounds were substantiated by objective facts and evidence, if his conduct constituted a breach of party rules, whether the disciplinary process was executed lawfully and impartially, and if the two-year suspension is legally proportionate and justified.

In addition to the by-election support issue, Jin faced disciplinary action for another incident. This involved remarks he made during a parliamentary meeting last month, which were widely perceived as insensitive towards the victim of the "roundhouse kick" assault case in Busan.
