Seoul: The floor leader of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) announced on Monday his appointment to temporarily head the party's interim emergency leadership committee. This decision comes as the party grapples with internal chaos following recent political setbacks.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Song Eon-seog will "temporarily take on the role of interim leader to set up the party's top decision-making body" after the departure of Rep. Kim Yong-tae, whose term concluded on Monday. The conservative PPP has been struggling after the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, coupled with his unsuccessful attempt at martial law and a significant defeat in the June 3 presidential election.
The party remains divided over the consequences of Yoon's failed martial law imposition. In an effort to stabilize, the PPP has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to officially appoint Song as interim leader. This meeting will also focus on approving a caretaker-style emergency leadership committee, which will oversee the organization of a national convention anticipated in August.
Song underscored the committee's role as a "temporary decision-making body" until the election of new leadership at the upcoming convention.
