Seoul: South Korean steelmaker POSCO announced that it has successfully raised $700 million through a global bond sale in international markets, aimed at refinancing its maturing corporate debt. This issuance marks the first instance of a South Korean company engaging in a dollar-denominated global bond sale this year, as highlighted in the company's press release.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the bonds were strategically issued in two tranches, comprising $400 million in five-year notes and $300 million in 10-year notes. An industry official noted that POSCO's substantial fundraising effort has not only bolstered the nation's dollar liquidity but has also enhanced the credit standing of Korean enterprises.
The issuance saw strong investor demand, which enabled POSCO to price the bonds at relatively low spreads of 75 basis points for the five-year notes and 90 basis points for the 10-year notes above the corresponding U.S. Treasury yields. This strategic move is expected to contribute positively to the financial stability and growth prospects of POSCO and other Korean companies.
