Seoul: The Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) on Friday issued a special discipline alert following a series of cases involving the inappropriate handling of duties by police officers, including the false closure of a missing person case on the southern island of Jeju. The alert will be enforced nationwide for 10 days through September 6, with inspections of police officers' conduct to be strengthened during this period.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the special alert was prompted by several incidents of police officers mishandling their duties, including a recent case in Jeju where an officer falsely closed a missing person case without verifying the individual's safety. The alert aims to address these issues by implementing stricter oversight and accountability measures.

During the alert period, all group meals will be prohibited, and officers will be asked to refrain from drinking, as stated by the KNPA. Events will also be discouraged or postponed if possible to minimize potential misconduct. The KNPA, along with metropolitan and provincial police agencies, will conduct special alert-related meetings at least once, while front-line police stations and mobile units will hold daily meetings to maintain heightened awareness and vigilance.

The police will also enhance internal vigilance by providing officers with training on preventing misconduct and sending them frequent text messages to remind them of the special alert. This initiative underscores the agency's commitment to maintaining discipline and integrity within its ranks during this critical period.
