Seoul: Outgoing Prime Minister Kim Min-seok stated his intent to contribute to the success of President Lee Jae Myung's administration as he transitions back to a legislative role within the ruling party. This announcement came as Kim attended what is likely his final Cabinet meeting, marking the end of his tenure as the nation's second-highest official.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim, who has been a significant political ally to President Lee, is eyeing a leadership position in the Democratic Party (DP) at its forthcoming national convention. Kim has served as the prime minister under Lee since July of last year and now aims to further his influence as a lawmaker. "I hope you will work hard with the president and the next prime minister and serve the people so that after some time, the Lee Jae Myung administration will be recorded as the first chapter of the Republic of Korea's golden age," Kim remarked. He emphasized his commitment to supporting state affairs from his position in the party and National Assembly.
President Lee has nominated Han Seong-sook, the current minister for small and medium-sized enterprises and startups, to take over as prime minister. Han's nomination underwent a two-day confirmation hearing by the National Assembly last week and is anticipated to be approved due to the ruling party's majority.
The race for the Democratic Party leadership sees Kim facing off against former DP leader Jung Chung-rae. Should Kim be elected, it is expected to consolidate President Lee's influence within the party amidst ongoing internal factional challenges.
