Seoul: OpenAI Korea announced on Friday that it has "nothing new to announce" regarding a potential collaboration with Samsung Electronics Co. for developing next-generation semiconductors. This statement was in response to circulating reports suggesting a possible partnership between the U.S. tech firm and the South Korean chipmaker.

According to Yonhap News Agency, OpenAI Korea clarified that any mention of expanding collaboration with Samsung was related to Samsung Electronics' previous decision to integrate ChatGPT and a letter of intent (LOI) announced in October of the previous year. OpenAI emphasized that there are no current plans to co-develop chips with Samsung.

These clarifications follow media reports from Wednesday that suggested OpenAI was enhancing its partnership with Samsung to produce its own chips. The reports cited comments made by Kim Kyung-hoon, the general manager of OpenAI Korea, during a press conference where he highlighted the progress and recognition gained in their joint production and research efforts with Samsung Electronics.

Kim's remarks came on the heels of OpenAI's announcement of a custom artificial intelligence (AI) chip, Jalapeno, co-designed with Broadcom in June. The development of this chip has been part of OpenAI's broader strategic initiatives.

The 2025 LOI between OpenAI and Samsung does involve the supply of advanced semiconductor solutions, but it is specifically focused on OpenAI's Stargate initiative. This project aims to establish massive AI data centers throughout the United States, further expanding OpenAI's technological infrastructure.
