Seoul: South Korea's nuclear watchdog has approved a plan to extend the lifespan of the Kori-2 nuclear reactor by an additional 10 years. This decision aligns with the government's efforts towards a more varied energy mix as part of its green energy initiatives amidst the burgeoning AI industry.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the approval by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission comes two years after the Kori-2 reactor, located on the southeastern coast, ceased operations following 40 years of service that began in 1983. The commission's review determined that the reactor maintains adequate safety margins and complies with all safety requirements, including environmental impact assessments.
The watchdog announced, "Accordingly, the Kori-2 reactor can operate through April 8, 2033." This decision is likely to influence the future of nine other aging reactors for which Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) intends to seek life extensions.
Kori-2 is currently South Korea's oldest active reactor, with Kori-1 and Wolsong-1 having been permanently shut down. The commission had previously conducted two rounds of review in September and October but delayed the decision pending further evaluation.
KHNP plans to undertake equipment replacements to ensure the reactor's safety margins, followed by an on-site inspection by the watchdog before resuming operations. Choi Won-ho, the commission's chairperson, emphasized the importance of these inspections to verify compliance with safety standards.
The administration under Lee Jae Myung is focused on expanding renewable energy use, although there are concerns about potential power shortages due to the AI industry's growth. KHNP has welcomed the decision, committing to prioritize safety in the reactor's timely restart.
Nuclear power is expected to play a crucial role in meeting increased energy demands from advanced industries, including AI and data centers, while supporting South Korea's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Experts like Choi Sung-min, a nuclear energy professor at KAIST, affirm the economic and competitive advantages of nuclear energy, highlighting its role in achieving the nation's carbon emission reduction targets.
The government has also approved a plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 53 to 61 percent from 2018 levels by 2035, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.
