Pyongyang: The top diplomats of North Korea and China engaged in discussions on Thursday in Pyongyang, focusing on enhancing bilateral ties, as reported by a Chinese media outlet.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during his talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, expressed Beijing's readiness to collaborate with Pyongyang to further solidify their bilateral relationship. This visit marks Wang's first trip to North Korea since September 2019, initiated by an invitation from North Korea's foreign ministry for a two-day visit concluding on Friday.
Wang emphasized China's commitment to working with North Korea to strengthen strategic communication and consolidate the positive momentum in their relationship. He highlighted China's willingness to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen dialogue and practical cooperation across various sectors, and promote people-to-people exchanges to support the economic and social development of both countries.
Choe responded by affirming that their relationship is deep, solid, and sustainable, emphasizing that advancing their ties remains an unwavering position for Pyongyang. The diplomats also agreed to collaborate on organizing commemorative events to mark the 65th anniversary of the signing of the bilateral treaty of friendship and mutual assistance.
During his visit, Wang is expected to pay a courtesy call on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and deliver a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping. This visit precedes U.S. President Donald Trump's planned trip to China next month for talks with Xi, amid speculation of a potential meeting with Kim during Trump's visit.
There are indications that North Korea and China are striving to improve relations that have been strained by North Korea's alignment with Russia. Recently, Pyongyang and Beijing have resumed direct rail and flight services for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
