Pyongyang: North Korea has inaugurated a new street in Pyongyang dedicated to the families of North Korean soldiers who lost their lives during the Russia-Ukraine war, as reported by its state media on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was present at the opening ceremony of Saeppyol Street on Sunday. He was accompanied by his daughter Ju-ae and other officials. During his address, Kim highlighted that the new street was built to honor the sacrifices of soldiers who gave their lives to defend sacred values, ensuring their legacy endures.
Kim described the street as a significant achievement for the current generation and a source of pride for Pyongyang and North Korea. He emphasized that the street is intended for the bereaved families of fallen soldiers, other combatants involved in overseas military operations, and members of the regiment of engineers. He assured that the state and the Party would take steps to provide these families with a dignified life, enjoying state privileges and societal care.
Following his speech, Kim participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and visited several families' homes to offer personal condolences. The development of Saeppyol Street was initially announced by Kim in August of the previous year, as part of efforts to commemorate the soldiers and garner domestic support for North Korea's involvement in the conflict. However, the report did not specify the number of homes constructed for the families.
