Seoul: North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, South Korea's military reported, marking the North's first weapons test of the year. The launch occurred amidst a backdrop of significant international developments, including President Lee Jae Myung's upcoming visit to Beijing for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and a recent announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro through a military operation.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected the missile launches from near Pyongyang at approximately 7:50 a.m. The JCS emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong readiness posture, coordinating closely with the United States and Japan in monitoring North Korea's ballistic missile activities, especially in light of the potential for further launches.

The latest missile test follows North Korea's previous short-range ballistic missile launch into the East Sea on November 7, which was the sixth such test conducted last year. Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, commented on the situation, stating, "The U.S. strike in Venezuela and capture of President Maduro may possibly send a powerful message to Kim Jong-un, one of an existential threat and one on the justification of adherence to nuclear arms."
