Seoul: Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Kang Dong-gil has been suspended for one month due to his alleged involvement in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law attempt in late 2024, sources revealed.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the defense ministry made this decision following a committee meeting last Friday to determine disciplinary measures against Adm. Kang. The meeting was prompted by information that he assisted in establishing the martial law command on the night of December 3, 2024.

The ministry opted for "heavy" disciplinary action against Kang, who was relieved of his duties last month amid the allegations. Although the specific details of the punishment were not disclosed, the suspension underscores the severity of the accusations.

Kang, who previously held the position of chief of the directorate of military support at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is accused of directing his subordinate to support the formation of the martial law command, acting on instructions from the then deputy martial law commander.

Since Kang's removal from duty on February 13, the deputy chief of the Navy has taken over as the acting Navy chief.
