Seoul: When assembling the starting lineup for his debut game as manager of the South Korean national baseball team, Ryu Ji-hyun focused on advanced metrics. With South Korea facing the Czech Republic at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, Ryu highlighted the importance of weighted runs created plus, or wRC+, a comprehensive hitting stat that adjusts performance based on the ballpark and league average.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ryu benefits from having KT Wiz outfielder Ahn Hyun-min, the reigning South Korean league leader in wRC+. The 22-year-old had an impressive rookie season in the Korea Baseball Organization, leading all freshmen with a .334 batting average, a .448 on-base percentage, and a .570 slugging percentage, alongside 22 home runs and 80 RBIs. Ahn led all KBO players with a 172.5 wRC+.
Ahn typically batted third for the Wiz, but Ryu opted to place him higher in the lineup. "Having Ahn Hyun-min in the No. 2 spot is the key point of our lineup," Ryu stated during his pregame media session. "We prioritized wRC+ among many statistics. Based on his KBO performance this year, we believe he can best enhance our run production from a higher spot."
Ryu, making his managerial debut for the national team, had been on the coaching staff for three years before his promotion in January. "I felt the most pressure when I was first appointed," Ryu shared. "Now, I am more relaxed, knowing these players have worked diligently for these games."
The team will face the Czechs again on Sunday and then travel to Tokyo for two games against Japan next weekend. These matchups are part of South Korea's preparations for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Before Saturday's practice, Ryu expressed gratitude to his players for their dedication, especially after their KBO seasons ended. "I told them they are the best baseball players in this country, and they should be proud," Ryu said. "With a packed stadium expected, I encouraged the team to put on a good show for our fans."
