Seoul: The opposition-controlled National Assembly has passed a bill mandating a special probe into allegations surrounding first lady Kim Keon Hee. The bill, led by the main opposition Democratic Party, was approved with a 179-85 vote and one abstention during a plenary session.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the special counsel bill calls for thorough investigations into allegations involving Kim’s participation in stock manipulation and the receipt of a luxury bag, among other issues. Previous similar bills aimed at the first lady had been vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol and later scrapped during revotes. The fourth and latest attempt was rejected by acting President Choi Sang-mok in December, following Yoon’s impeachment and suspension from duty.
A permanent special counsel differs from a regular one in that the president does not have the authority to veto it, although delaying the appointment of the counsel remains a possibility. It is currently uncertain whether acting President Choi will move forward with appointing special prosecutors recommended by the opposition party.
