N.K. Leader’s Sister Declares Pyongyang’s Nuclear Status ‘Irreversible’

Pyongyang: The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has declared that North Korea's status as a nuclear-armed state is absolutely irreversible, describing it as a "line of no retreat" and asserting that any threats against it will not be tolerated, as reported by the North's state media on Sunday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Yo-jong made these remarks in a statement released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). She reiterated North Korea's position that its nuclear weapons program is nonnegotiable and dismissed international efforts aimed at denuclearization. Kim Yo-jong stated, "The DPRK's status as a nuclear weapons state is the line of no retreat, and it is a stark reality whether anyone recognizes it or not."

Her statement was made public just one day before Chinese President Xi Jinping's scheduled visit to Pyongyang, a visit apparently underscoring the non-negotiability of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program in discussions between Xi and Kim Jong-un.

With Xi's visit on the horizon, a U.S. State Department spokesperson had earlier highlighted that U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi had reaffirmed their mutual objective of denuclearizing North Korea during their summit in Beijing last month. However, Kim Yo-jong dismissed the U.S. official's comments, accusing Washington of "spreading false information" and urged the U.S. to abandon its "daydream" of denuclearization.

She also suggested that Pyongyang had received a direct explanation from Beijing about the discussions between Trump and Xi, asserting, "We have the most accurate information about the fact."

The statement further emphasized North Korea's justification for enhancing its military capabilities, citing ongoing military threats from hostile nations, including Washington's recent approval of a potential sale of Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) precision bombs and related equipment to South Korea.

Kim reiterated, "This is the reason why we are concentrating on bolstering up the self-defense capacity for defending the security of the state from the ceaseless arms buildup of the hostile countries, and we will have to do this."

Highlighting the legality of its nuclear forces under the constitution, Kim emphasized nuclear capability as the most compelling argument in disputes with "those who worship power," and affirmed that North Korea will neither tolerate nor compromise on matters of sovereignty and security.
