Mr. Phongsak Jitjaiphak, 52 years old, a red-clawed shrimp farmer in Village No. 5, Na Yong Nuea Subdistrict, Na Yong District, Trang Province, said that the land in this area was originally used to grow rubber trees on about 5 rai. Later, he cut down the rubber plantation on about 1 rai. He turned to raising freshwater lobsters or red-clawed shrimp, which are easy to raise and grow quickly. They can be raised in cement ponds, earthen ponds, or rice fields. They are suitable for farmers who are looking for an additional job that does not require a lot of time to take care of. They only need to be fed once a day. They mostly eat small shrimp, small pieces of fish, and egg yolks. Red Claw Shrimp takes about 7-8 months to raise. You will get at least 100 shrimp fry per pair. Seven-day-old Red Claw Shrimp fry sell for 5-7 baht each. Parent shrimp that are 3 months old sell for 200 baht per pair. Five months old and up sell for 500 baht per pair. However, fully grown shrimp are sold as meat for consumption at 350-380 baht per kilogram, or about 15-20 shrimp per kilogram. Red claw shrimp has a lot of meat, sweet taste, fragrant, and creamy, like a mixture of mantis shrimp and shrimp. It can be sold all year round, without having to risk windstorms like rubber trees. The market can still support a lot because there are few farmers. The farm sells 10,000-20,000 baht per month. No matter how much there is, it is not enough to sell. Some people buy it to raise as ornamental shrimp. Red claw shrimp lay eggs 2-3 times a year, with at least 100 eggs each time. Invest once, harvest and sell for life. In addition, you can raise ornamental fish to generate additional income, such as goldfish, guppies, swordtails, and balloon fish. Each fish costs 10-35 baht. Mr. Phongsak said that the wholesale price of red claw shrimp ran ges from 350-380 baht, depending on the size. The most popular size is 4-5 inches, or 15-20 per kilogram. The market needs it.
