Seoul: The defense ministry announced on Monday plans for a special inspection of all military units this month following a series of firearms-related deaths and accidents within the armed services. The initiative aims to enhance safety and prevent future incidents.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the inspection is scheduled to commence on Tuesday and will continue through September 30. This effort seeks to ensure the safe management of firearms and explosives and to assess the mental health of military personnel. The directive, issued by Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, applies to all military units and civilian employees associated with the military.
The decision follows recent tragic events, including the suicide of an Army sergeant first class at a front-line guard post and an artillery unit explosion in the northern border city of Paju, which injured ten individuals. Additionally, a Marine Corps sergeant was fatally shot in the head at a unit located on an island off the country's west coast. These incidents have prompted an urgent review of safety protocols and mental health resources within the military.
