Seoul: Today marks several significant events in Korean history, spanning centuries and highlighting pivotal moments in the nation's development. One of the earliest recorded milestones is the publication of "Samguksagi" in 1145, a historical record about the three kingdoms that governed the Korean Peninsula from 57 B.C. to A.D. 668. This monumental work was produced by royal scholars, led by Kim Bu-sik, under the direction of King Injong during the Goryeo Dynasty era.
According to Yonhap News Agency, another notable event occurred in 1902 when a group of 121 Koreans departed from the port of Incheon to emigrate to Hawaii. They were the first Korean immigrants to settle in the island republic, which later became part of the United States. Between 1902 and 1905, approximately 7,800 Koreans moved to Hawaii, largely to work on sugarcane plantations.
In the realm of economics, 1977 marked a breakthrough for South Korea as its exports surpassed the US$10 billion mark for the first time. This milestone signified the nation's growing influence in global trade.
The diplomatic landscape also saw significant changes over the years. In 1992, South Korea established diplomatic relations with Vietnam, fostering stronger bilateral cooperation. More recently, in 2012, the leaders of China, Japan, and Russia extended their congratulations to South Korean President-elect Park Geun-hye following her election victory.
Tragedy struck in 1999 when a Korean Air cargo plane crashed during takeoff from Stansted Airport near London, resulting in the deaths of its four crew members. The incident underscored the importance of aviation safety measures.
In the financial sector, 2000 witnessed the merger of Kookmin Bank and the Housing and Commercial Bank, creating South Korea's largest commercial banking entity. This consolidation aimed to enhance financial stability and competitiveness.
The geopolitical sphere also experienced tensions in 2015, as South Korea and China held their first talks in seven years to address disputes over overlapping exclusive economic zones. The contentious Ieo Islet, a submerged reef rich in fishery resources, remained a point of contention due to its strategic importance.
In the judicial arena, 2017 saw Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years, on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust. The Seoul Central District Court also sentenced his father, Shin Kyuk-ho, to four years in prison with a fine for involvement in management irregularities within the conglomerate.
