Phnom penh: The main suspect behind the torture and killing of a South Korean college student, who was allegedly involved in online scams in Cambodia, has been arrested by local police officers, a diplomatic source confirmed.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Cambodian authorities captured the suspect, a Chinese national, in Phnom Penh on Thursday. The arrest was made on charges of murder and other related offenses. The suspect is accused of torturing and murdering the 22-year-old student, surnamed Park, near Bokor Mountain, an area notorious for employment scams and detentions targeting South Koreans.

The suspect, identified as Lee, was reportedly apprehended while dining at a restaurant in the capital city. Local investigators have stated that they cannot disclose further details as the investigation is still ongoing.

The Korean Embassy in Cambodia has been informed of the arrest by local officials and is considering the possibility of repatriating the suspect to South Korea. Park had traveled to Cambodia on July 17, claiming he was attending an exhibition. His body was discovered inside a car on August 8, showing signs of torture.

Three other Chinese nationals allegedly involved in the crime were indicted last month by a Cambodian court on charges including murder and fraud. The incident has sparked public outrage in South Korea, leading the government to dispatch a delegation to Cambodia and create a joint task force to combat online scams and related crimes affecting its citizens.
