LG and KAIST Unveil 12-Minute Fast-Charging Technology for Lithium Metal Batteries

Seoul: South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution Ltd. announced a groundbreaking development in fast-charging technology that enables electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with lithium metal batteries to be fully charged in just 12 minutes.

According to Yonhap News Agency, LG Energy Solution collaborated with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) to create this advanced technology. This innovation could allow EVs to travel over 800 kilometers on a single charge while maintaining fast-charging capabilities. The research findings have been published in the esteemed scientific journal, Nature Energy.

Lithium metal batteries are touted as a promising next-generation solution due to their potential to reduce weight and volume compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, thereby offering higher energy density. However, the industry has faced hurdles in commercializing these batteries due to difficulties in ensuring their stability.

Kim Je-young, chief technology officer (CTO) of LG Energy Solution, emphasized the company's commitment to overcoming technical challenges through ongoing collaboration with the academic community to advance the next-generation battery industry.
