Lee’s Approval Rating Rebounds Amid Economic Concerns: Poll

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating has seen a slight rebound after a steady decline over the past six weeks, according to a recent poll released on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the poll was commissioned by the EKN newspaper and carried out by Realmeter. It shows a 0.5 percentage point increase in President Lee's approval rating, bringing it to 47 percent. Meanwhile, disapproval ratings have slightly decreased by 0.3 percentage points, now standing at 49.2 percent. The pollster attributed this rebound to the government's announcement of the "three megaprojects" initiative, which is a substantial 4,755 trillion-won (approximately US$3.11 trillion) investment plan focusing on semiconductors, physical artificial intelligence (AI), and AI data centers.

However, Realmeter noted that the rebound was tempered by ongoing economic challenges, including a sharp decline in stock prices and a weakened Korean won. Despite these hurdles, the poll suggests a cautious optimism surrounding the government's new initiatives.

The weekly survey, which involved 2,525 respondents aged 18 and older, was conducted from Monday to Friday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level, indicating a reliable snapshot of current public opinion.

In a related survey conducted by Realmeter, support for the ruling Democratic Party increased by 2 percentage points from the previous week, reaching 43 percent. Conversely, the main opposition People Power Party saw a decrease in support, with their ratings falling by 1.7 percentage points to 40.3 percent. This separate survey involved 1,008 individuals aged 18 and over and was conducted on Thursday and Friday, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points and a confidence level of 95 percent.
