Lee’s Approval Rating Dips Following Local Elections: Poll

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating slipped to 50.6 percent following last week's local elections, a poll showed Wednesday, amid controversy over ballot shortages that disrupted voting in parts of Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the poll, commissioned by Straight News and conducted by Jowon C and I, revealed that 50.6 percent of respondents believed Lee was performing well, marking a decline of 6.4 percentage points from the previous survey. The negative assessment stood at 45.5 percent, while 3.9 percent of those surveyed remained undecided.

The poll also indicated that support for the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) was at 41.6 percent, slightly ahead of the 40.4 percent backing for the ruling Democratic Party (DP). Furthermore, 43.1 percent of respondents perceived the local elections as a victory for the DP, whereas 37.7 percent viewed it as a success for opposition parties, including the PPP.

Despite the DP winning 12 of the 16 key metropolitan mayoral and gubernatorial races, they failed to secure the symbolic Seoul mayoralty. Incumbent Mayor Oh Se-hoon of the PPP successfully secured a fifth term.

An unprecedented shortage of ballots at more than a dozen polling stations in Seoul during the elections led to continued protests. Demonstrators gathered near a vote-counting facility in eastern Seoul on Wednesday for the sixth consecutive day, calling for a revote.

The survey, involving 2,000 adults from Saturday through Monday, had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
