Bongha: President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday pledged to uphold the legacy of late former President Roh Moo-hyun by striving to build a nation grounded in fairness, inclusion, and respect for human dignity. Lee delivered this commitment during a eulogy at a ceremony commemorating the 17th anniversary of Roh's death, held in the southeastern rural village of Bongha, where Roh resided following his retirement.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee expressed his connection to Roh's ideals, stating, "After you left, so many 'Roh Moo-hyuns' were born and I am one of them." He acknowledged the significant responsibility that comes with the presidency and vowed to fulfill Roh's vision of a society where success is attainable without privilege, hard work is justly rewarded, and people are embraced regardless of their backgrounds. He emphasized the importance of balanced development, ensuring prosperity for both the capital region and the rest of the country.

Lee also announced his commitment to reform efforts aimed at eliminating rule-breaking and privilege, despite potential resistance from established powers. He assured, "This government will bring to fruition the dreams you left unfulfilled."

Addressing North Korean relations, Lee declared his intent to uphold the spirit of the Oct. 4 Inter-Korean Declaration, initially signed by Roh and late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. The declaration focused on improving relations between the two Koreas and reducing military tensions. Lee affirmed, "We will firmly walk on the path toward peaceful coexistence and mutual growth."

Roh Moo-hyun, a liberal politician who served as president from 2003 to 2008, tragically ended his life in 2007 amid a corruption investigation involving his family and aides. Lee had previously attended the memorial event last year as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate.
