Lee Stresses Unique Approach to North Korean Nuclear Issue in Talks with Trump

Paris: President Lee Jae Myung announced that he urged U.S. President Donald Trump to adopt a unique strategy for the North Korean nuclear issue during their recent discussions at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France. Lee emphasized that the North Korean situation should not be managed in the same manner as other international nuclear concerns.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee shared insights from his conversation with Trump at a press briefing following his 10-day European tour. The two leaders engaged in multiple discussions throughout the summit, including a notable exchange during a dinner banquet on Tuesday. Trump reportedly expressed regret over past inaction regarding North Korea's nuclear developments, which ultimately led to the nation acquiring nuclear capabilities.

In response, Lee communicated to Trump the necessity of a distinct approach for North Korea, which Trump acknowledged, expressing concern over the absence of a definitive resolution. Lee highlighted the importance of not mirroring the strategies used in the Middle East, suggesting instead a phased approach that begins with halting nuclear material production and transferring existing stockpiles abroad before working towards comprehensive denuclearization.

Lee has consistently advocated for an initial focus on curbing Pyongyang's nuclear and missile activities as a stepping stone towards the broader goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. Trump considered this phased proposal as a potential strategy, indicating he would contemplate further on it.

The president also conveyed his determination to revive communication with North Korea despite ongoing tensions, which he anticipates will persist for some time. He acknowledged the difficulty South Korea faces in advancing peace efforts while communication channels remain strained, stressing the pivotal role the U.S. plays in North Korea's security perceptions.

Additionally, Lee revealed he had requested Pope Leo XIV to visit North Korea and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) during their meeting at the Vatican. Lee invited the pope to South Korea for World Youth Day next year, proposing that the visit include a trip to North Korea and potentially the DMZ. The pope expressed interest in considering this proposal.
