Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung met with patients suffering from rare diseases and their families, promising to enhance government support so they can receive the necessary medical treatment without excessive financial burden. Lee visited the Heavy Ion Therapy Research Institute at Yonsei Cancer Center in western Seoul on Christmas Eve as part of his outreach to the socially vulnerable group.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee emphasized that treatment for rare diseases is a challenge that individuals cannot easily manage alone. He noted that patients with rare conditions often receive less attention and support because of their small numbers, despite the government's efforts to enhance medical services for them. "Every life is precious," he stated, highlighting the unfairness faced by those who are left behind due to their rarity.

Although the government has initiated policies to improve treatment, diagnosis, and welfare support, Lee admitted that certain measures have yet to be implemented or remain insufficient. During the visit, accompanied by Health Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong, Lee expressed his intention to gather feedback from patients and their families to further enhance services for them.

Patients with rare diseases confront significant financial burdens and difficulties in obtaining imported medicines due to regulatory challenges. President Lee's commitment to addressing these issues aims to alleviate the struggles faced by these individuals and ensure they receive the support they need.
