Daejeon: President Lee Jae Myung has committed to enhancing support for research and development (R and D), aiming to reverse budget reductions made by the former administration. Lee announced the initiative during a debate focused on nurturing scientists, emphasizing the government's allocation of a record 35.4 trillion won (US$25.1 billion) for R and D, marking a 19.3 percent increase from the current year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee stated that the administration plans not only to restore the previous budget levels but to further invest in the nation's research and development capabilities. He highlighted South Korea's progress in various fields, attributing it to the dedication and hard work of its people. Lee acknowledged the sacrifices made by previous generations, who prioritized education even under challenging circumstances, as a foundation for the country's current advancements.

Lee also promised to create an R and D environment that provides researchers with the "right and freedom to fail." He noted that countries that have prioritized science and research typically experience prosperity. This announcement follows the government's unveiling of the R and D budget for the upcoming year in August, which came after budget cuts during the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, raising concerns about diminishing competitiveness and potential harm to the nation's fundamental research infrastructure.
