Daejeon: President Lee Jae Myung has directed the government to undertake comprehensive measures to restore the administrative computer networks and alleviate public inconvenience after a fire severely disrupted services at the state data center. Lee issued the directive during an emergency meeting, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the disruptions caused by the blaze at the National Information Resources Service in Daejeon, which was triggered by a lithium-ion battery explosion.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the fire resulted in the shutdown of 647 online systems, with 96 systems suffering direct damage. Critical services, including the mobile identification system and online postal service, were among those impacted. In response, the government has initiated the process of restoring 551 unaffected computer systems to ensure normal service operations.
President Lee has urged government agencies to mobilize all available resources to expedite the restoration of the government system and minimize public disruption. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung conveyed Lee's instructions, highlighting the need for collaboration with the private sector to ensure continuity in essential services like finance, delivery, and transportation.
In addition to immediate recovery efforts, Lee has mandated the formulation of long-term preventive measures, such as establishing a "double-layer operating system" for state computer networks, to avert similar incidents in the future. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the public experiences no inconvenience during the forthcoming Chuseok fall harvest holiday, calling on senior officials to prioritize resolving the current crisis.
