Rome: President Lee Jae Myung stated that South Korea and Italy are optimal partners for business cooperation, emphasizing that the two nations could form a "new industrial order" through collaboration. He made these remarks during the opening of a business roundtable in Rome, which aimed to explore enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries. According to Yonhap News Agency, during a summit with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, both leaders agreed to elevate their bilateral ties to a special strategic partnership. They also discussed expanding cooperation in strategic areas such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI). President Lee noted the complementary strengths of the two nations: Italy's prowess in basic science combined with creative engineering and design, and South Korea's capabilities in advanced manufacturing and innovative technology. He highlighted the potential for these strengths to establish a new industrial order and create an innovative ecosystem amid a rapidly changing global economy driven by technological competition and supply chain restructuring. Expressing his hopes for overcoming global economic uncertainties, President Lee underscored the potential for economic cooperation in areas such as AI, semiconductors, energy, healthcare, cosmetics, and other consumer goods. The event was attended by business leaders from 30 companies from both countries. Notable South Korean participants included Ryu Jin, chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries; Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong; Hyosung Group Chairman Cho Hyun-joon; Hyundai Motor Co. President Sung Kim; and Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon. Representing Italy were Giorgio Marsiaj, vice president of the General Confederation of Italian Industry, or Confindustria, and Benedetto Vigna, CEO of luxury carmaker Ferrari. The participating business leaders engaged in discussions to enhance cooperation in strategic areas, focusing on advanced industries, energy, infrastructure, and future-oriented sectors.
