Lee Condemns Political Violence After Shooting at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Washington: President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday called political violence a "grave threat" to democracy that cannot be justified under any circumstances, following a shooting at the White House correspondents' dinner.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee made the remarks after U.S. President Donald Trump announced Saturday that an alleged shooter from California had been apprehended after gunfire erupted at the annual event in Washington. Lee emphasized that such acts undermine the foundation of democracy and expressed his concern through a message on X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting the regrettable nature of the incident at an event celebrating the press and freedom of speech.

In his message, Lee expressed his relief upon learning that President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and other attendees remained unharmed. He extended his sympathies to the American people and reiterated the Republic of Korea's firm opposition to violence and extremism that threaten democratic values and the rule of law.

During the event, Trump was seated on stage in front of a hotel ballroom when gunshots were fired, prompting his quick removal by Secret Service personnel. Trump later assured via social media that he, the first lady, Vice President JD Vance, and cabinet members were unharmed and in "perfect condition."
