Lee and UAE President Discuss Strategic Economic Cooperation in Abu Dhabi

Abu dhabi: President Lee Jae Myung held summit talks with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday to discuss strategic cooperation in the areas of defense, advanced technologies, and energy. The discussions aimed to strengthen the bilateral economic ties between the two nations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee attended an official welcoming ceremony at the presidential palace in Abu Dhabi. This was followed by a ceremony to exchange memorandums of understanding in several sectors, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, aerospace, and culture. These agreements are expected to expand cooperation beyond traditional sectors such as trade, defense, nuclear power, and energy, moving into more future-oriented fields.

In a written interview with UAE newspaper Aletihad, Lee expressed his hope that his visit would lay the foundation for a "new centennial phase" in bilateral ties. He emphasized the significance of expanding cooperation into new areas, which reflects his administration's commitment to strengthening relations with the UAE. Lee highlighted that choosing the UAE as the first destination of his inaugural Middle East trip since taking office in June underscores this commitment.

The UAE holds a unique position as the only Middle Eastern nation with which South Korea has established a special strategic partnership. To honor Lee's state visit, four UAE Air Force fighter jets escorted his presidential aircraft as it entered UAE airspace. Additionally, major buildings in Abu Dhabi were illuminated with the South Korean flag, marking a warm welcome for the South Korean President.
