Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung stated on Tuesday that any potential relocation of military assets belonging to the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) will not compromise the deterrence strategy against North Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee addressed media reports suggesting the USFK might have recently moved some weapons, including an anti-missile defense system. During a Cabinet meeting, Lee asserted that the deterrence strategy remains unaffected by such potential shifts in military assets. While his remarks did not specifically confirm the relocation or repositioning of USFK's military resources, Lee emphasized South Korea's opposition to any potential shifts. He acknowledged, however, the "stark reality" that South Korea's views might not be fully accommodated.

"Our government expects the USFK to fully contribute to stability and peace on the Korean Peninsula, which I believe it has done so far," Lee remarked. He added that depending on evolving circumstances, the USFK might deploy some air defense systems abroad due to its military requirements. Despite South Korea's opposition, Lee recognized the limitations in asserting their position.

Highlighting the defense capabilities, Lee noted that South Korea's military expenditure ranks among the world's top five and is approximately 1.4 times North Korea's GDP, underscoring a "significant gap" in military prowess between the two countries. He emphasized the importance of South Korea assuming a leadership role in its defense, preparing for worst-case scenarios amidst the shifting global security environment.

"Just as we must routinely prepare for war even if the possibility is slim, there may come times when external support disappears due to changes in the international order. Even in such cases, we must fully build up our self-reliant defense capabilities so that we can defend ourselves on our own," Lee concluded.
