Lee Accepts Resignation of Senior Aide Amid Asset Controversy

Seoul: President Lee Jae-myung has accepted the resignation of a senior aide for civil affairs, following controversies surrounding undisclosed real estate holdings and a proxy loan. According to Yonhap News Agency, Oh Kwang-soo, who had been in the position of senior presidential secretary for civil affairs for only five days, submitted his resignation on Thursday. This marks the first resignation of a high-ranking official since President Lee assumed office on June 4. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated that President Lee accepted Oh's resignation due to the significance of the role, which plays a key part in maintaining discipline among public officials. Kang also mentioned that the President aims to appoint a successor for Oh promptly. Oh, a former prosecutor turned lawyer, faced scrutiny when allegations emerged that he managed real estate owned by his wife under an assumed name and failed to disclose these properties, as mandated for high-ranking officials. Further allegations accused Oh o f securing a substantial loan of 1.5 billion won (approximately US$1.1 million) from a savings bank using a friend's name back in 2007 during his tenure as a prosecutor. Despite expressing regret and embarrassment over the situation, Oh did not immediately resign when the allegations first surfaced. On Wednesday, a presidential official admitted to "inappropriate" conduct concerning Oh's asset management but did not clarify whether the allegations would affect his capacity to retain his position. The role of senior civil affairs secretary is crucial as it involves vetting high-ranking public officials and overseeing law enforcement agencies.
