Lawyer of Late Yangpyeong County Official Vows Legal Action Against Special Counsel Team

Seoul: The lawyer for a Yangpyeong County official who died last week after questioning by the special counsel investigating former first lady Kim Keon Hee announced on Tuesday plans to file a complaint against the investigators for abuse of power and other charges. This development follows the lawyer's assertion that the special counsel team engaged in an illegal probe, leading to the tragic death of his client.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lawyer Park Kyung-ho made these statements during a news conference at a memorial altar set up in front of the building housing the office of special counsel Min Joong-ki in downtown Seoul. Park has requested a review and copies of his client's interrogation records and is preparing to sue the investigators on grounds of abuse of power, committing cruel acts, and forging official documents.

The deceased official, whose identity remains undisclosed, was discovered dead at his residence last Friday. This occurred eight days after intense questioning by the special counsel investigators who were examining whether Kim's family improperly benefited from a land development project in Yangpyeong, located 52 kilometers east of Seoul.

Reports indicate the official left behind 21 pages of handwritten notes expressing grievances about coercion and pressure from the investigators. These notes reportedly elaborate on the psychological distress he endured during the questioning sessions, in which investigators allegedly attempted to persuade him to testify that he acted on the instructions of former Yangpyeong County head Kim Sun-gyo. Kim Sun-gyo is currently a lawmaker for the main opposition People Power Party (PPP).

The PPP has condemned the special counsel team's methods, accusing them of conducting a coercive and unlawful investigation to achieve a predetermined outcome. Park further revealed that his client had communicated before his death that the interrogation records produced by the special counsel team contained inaccuracies.

Moreover, Park alleged that the official was coerced into making a statement suggesting collusion with Kim Sun-gyo to unfairly benefit the former first lady's family in the development project.
