Seoul: South Korea's largest umbrella labor union and the farmers' association convened a significant rally in central Seoul on Wednesday, opposing the policies of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration and resulting in traffic congestion, as reported by officials. An estimated 6,000 participants from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and the general association of national farmers, known as Junnong, gathered to express their discontent with the government's perceived role in exacerbating economic difficulties for both farmers and the general populace amidst high inflation and declining rice prices. According to Yonhap News Agency, the rally prompted authorities to deploy 113 police units to the protest sites, leading to the partial closure of roads near Seoul City Hall during the evening rush hour. This resulted in significant traffic congestion. Despite the large turnout, no physical altercations between demonstrators and police officers were reported during this protest. This rally follows a pre vious anti-government demonstration organized by the KCTU earlier this month, during which some participants clashed with the police. These incidents have led to demands from opposition parties for an apology from police chief Cho Ji-ho and for disciplinary action against those accountable for the confrontation.
