Seoul: In a tragic turn of events in 1907, Lee Jun, a fervent Korean patriot, took his own life in The Hague by slashing his belly with a knife. This drastic action came after he was barred from attending an international peace meeting in the Dutch city, where he intended to voice his protest against Japan's colonial domination of the Korean Peninsula.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the incident highlighted the intense struggles and sacrifices faced by Koreans during the period of Japanese colonial rule. Moving forward to 1950, the United Nations secretary-general, responding to a Security Council resolution, made an appeal to U.N. member countries to contribute troops to the U.N. Command. This was a decisive move aimed at countering the North Korean invasion during the Korean War.
In 1993, significant diplomatic interactions took place between North Korea and the United States. High-level talks in Geneva between North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Kang Sok-ju and Robert Gallucci, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for political and military affairs, focused on permitting inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency at North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear facilities.
The year 2004 saw a cyber security breach when the National Intelligence Service identified Chinese hackers as responsible for infiltrating 278 computers across 10 government organizations. The attack involved information-stealing viruses known as the Peep Trojan and Backdoor Revacc.
In a strategic development in 2007, inspectors from the international atomic energy watchdog arrived in North Korea to commence operations aimed at shutting down and sealing off the Yongbyon nuclear reactor and its support facilities.
South Korea took a strong diplomatic stance in 2008 by recalling its ambassador to Japan. This action was in response to Japan's renewed territorial claims over Dokdo, a group of islets under South Korean control, marking a significant countermeasure against Japan's persistent territorial assertions.
In a humanitarian gesture in 2015, South Korea repatriated two out of five North Korean fishermen who had been rescued after their vessel was found adrift due to engine failure. The remaining three fishermen chose to defect to South Korea.
Finally, in 2018, South Korea's defense ministry summoned a Russian military attache after Russian aircraft violated South Korea's air defense identification zone (KADIZ). The foreign ministry also engaged with a senior Russian Embassy official in Seoul to protest the unprecedented four-time breach of the zone by Russian aircraft in a single day.
