Seoul: Korean Air Co. announced a new zero tolerance policy against passengers tampering with aircraft emergency exits, emphasizing the pursuit of criminal charges against violators to enhance aviation safety. The decision comes amid a noticeable increase in such incidents, which significantly endanger flight safety.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Korean Air reported 14 cases of exit tampering or attempted tampering over the past two years. Despite increased awareness following a notable 2023 Asiana Airlines incident, where a passenger opened an exit door mid-flight, the unauthorized handling of exit doors persists.
The Aviation Security Act in South Korea strictly prohibits tampering with aircraft doors, exits, or onboard equipment, with violations carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison. Korean Air emphasized its commitment to referring all cases for criminal prosecution, seeking civil damages for actual losses, and imposing travel bans on offenders.
